CHILD
SERVICES

Child Services

At Family Star we strive to support all aspects of a child’s development, both inside and beyond the classroom. High- quality individualized services in the areas of mental and physical health, nutrition, and disabilities ensure that each child is supported and able to learn and grow in inclusive environments.  Inside of our classrooms, we help collaboratively monitor your child’s physical and social- emotional development, offer teachers and caregivers consultation to best support the needs of children so that they are healthy and ready to achieve their full potential. In addition, by working with classroom staff and home visitors and providing health literacy education and resources for families, we aim to provide children with a foundation of healthy habits from an early age including oral hygiene and teeth brushing, eating a wide variety of heathy foods and participating in physical activity each day.

HEALTH

Family Star provides annual health screenings (hearing, dental, vision) and referrals to promote the child’s development. Health Advocates provide information, resources and coordinate health services. For school-based programs, this includes supporting with special dietary needs. The program also provides nurse consultation services.

DEVELOPMENT & DISABILITIES

Family Star provides developmental screenings to all children and supports with identification, referrals, and resources for children who may need evaluation or therapeutic services such as occupational, physical or speech therapy. As a program that celebrates inclusion, we welcome children who may have disabilities, individualized education plans (IEPs) or Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs).

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING AND MENTAL HEALTH

Family Star is committed to being a trauma-informed program and therefore offers services to support the mental well-being of children and families such as:

  • Prevention and early intervention of mental health disorders for young children through delivery of intentional social and emotional practices

  • Early identification of social, emotional, behaviorial concerns with consultative support and interventions for families and staff

  • Professional development, capacity-building and reflective consultation for staff

  • Referrals and linkages to community services for additional developmental services, mental health treatment, and caregiver support

NUTRITION

Family Star provides and supports age appropriate nutrition services each day while children are at school. This begins with breastmilk, infant formula and first foods, then a fully catered breakfast, lunch and snack. Meals are served family-style, giving children the opportunity to serve and feed themselves. Family-style dining supports the development of healthy habits and encourages children to enjoy a wide variety of foods while they develop important independent social and motor skills.
