Colorado Symphony Visits Family Star Montessori NE!

On April 8th, 2015 our Northeast Center (2940 Curtis Street) enjoyed a visit from the Colorado Symphony! The Symphony is a partner of the City and County of Denver's 5 by 5 Program, which provides Denver Head Start and Early Head Start children and their families with year-round access and educational opportunities at fifteen of Denver’s amazing cultural venues at no cost. When the Colorado Symphony contacted us to ask if they could practice their new program - the Petite Musique - with our students, we were ecstatic! Performed by a 16-piece chamber orchestra and narrator, this interactive program includes the musical telling of an age-appropriate story, a sing-a-long and a live dance-a-long, too! The program introduces the instruments of the orchestra to young children, which we love as a Montessori program.

Our students loved the performance! They all sat politely and quietly and gave their full attention. They were mesmerized  by the music. The orchestra brought in a mini version of itself, with numerous basses and violins, a flute, clarinet, piccolo, trumpet, tuba, and a percussion section. They briefly explained who they were to the students before starting with a rousing version of “Four Seasons.” After that they played “Bringing Home My Baby Bumble Bee” and asked the kids to sing along, followed by the classical piece, “The Flight of the Bumble Bee.”  They played a few more classical numbers and asked the children to act/pantomime along to the music and threw in a “Twinkle, Twinkle” sing-a-long, too. After that, a riveting narrator recited “The Three Little Pigs” to our students and the orchestra accompanied. Our Northeast students (ages 3-6) sat still the entire time and were enthralled with the storytelling and the music.

We're so grateful for the opportunity to enjoy the symphony right at our school, and are inspired by Colorado Symphony's commitment to our community's youth as one of Denver's 5 by 5 Partners.
