"Any child who is self-sufficient, who can tie his shoes, dress or undress himself, reflects in his joy and sense of achievement the image of human dignity, which is derived from a sense of independence."

Montessori is a comprehensive educational methodology based on the observation of children's needs in a variety of cultures all around the world. Beginning her work as a medical doctor in 1896, Maria Montessori worked with disadvantaged children in Rome, Italy, developing and adapting learning materials. She observed children and developed this educational approach based on her understanding of children's natural learning tendencies. In 1909 she wrote "The Montessori Method" to train teachers. By 1913 Montessori schools were operating in Italy, Europe and the United States.
The Montessori environment contains specially designed, beautifully constructed, self-directed manipulative materials that invite children to engage in learning activities of their own individual choice. Under the guidance of a trained directress (teacher), children in a Montessori classroom learn by making discoveries with the materials, cultivating concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning.
The classroom is a calm, orderly, prepared environment designed to support the child's need for purposeful activities in an atmosphere of respect for the young person who is allowed to choose his activities and work at his own pace. Children experience a blend of freedom and self-discipline in a place especially designed to meet their developmental needs. It is a multi-aged classroom where the older children help the younger ones. In helping others, children reinforce what they have already learned and strengthen their sense of responsibility. The younger children in turn benefit because children love to learn from their peers.
Family Star is different than other Montessori schools in the Denver Metro area because we work towards maintaining economic diversity in every classroom, at each site, and in the program as a whole.
We believe that economic status impacts the learning opportunities that children are given, so we create a community within our walls that reflects an ideal community outside our walls.
In the course of growing and learning together, both the parents and children learn to interact and build relationships with others who seem different from themselves, yet share commonalities such as the love of one's child, the stress of parenting, the challenges of making it to school and work on time, and the feeling of being ecstatic about one's baby's milestones.
At Family Star, each classroom works to maintain a balance of families who receive tuition support or subsidies and those who pay the full tuition.
Family Star offers a full-day, year-round Montessori curriculum to 140 children at a time, ages two months to six years old. We believe that the well-being of a child is dependent upon the well-being of the entire family. Therefore, we offer a range of programs designed to address the unique needs of each child and his or her family, including a Literacy Program, Child Services, Healthy Families, Family Services, and Future Star Pregnancy Program. Family Star is proud of the outstanding Montessori education environment we've created and welcomes the opportunity to inspire and mentor our teachers of the future. We offer internship opportunities to teachers going through Montessori training. As an approved observation center for both AMI and AMS certification programs, Family Star is an ideal place for students to come and fulfill their observation hours. We also offer internships to students enrolled in Early Childhood Education degree programs at colleges throughout Colorado. We will provide training, curriculum handouts and observation time for those who participate. For more information about our internship program, please contact Chad Jones, Education Coordinator, at (303) 295-7711.
