We really love the idea of letting children decide which toys to donate themselves; what a great way to give them control, as well as share the concepts of helping out others. I bet most parents would be surprised as to which toys they chose to keep versus which ones made it to the go away box. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

I would love to see some indication on the main page that there is a new post here. Some school sites I've been visiting lately have a News section on their main page that has just a sentence or two and then a link to click to read the entire article. I found that to be really helpful to quickly see whether there was new info of interest of me added.

Thanks!

I am one of the many parents guilty of having a toy box (and not just one either!). I'm feeling rushed much of the time and keeping toys from being everywhere is easier with a central place to "throw" them all at the end of the day. We definitely have too many toys. Having multiple children at different ages who are interested in different toys makes keeping their numbers down even more difficult.

I rarely buy toys. Most of them are gifts. I feel a sense of guilt giving them away or not having my children play with things that were given to them with love and some thought. Telling someone who loves my kids to not buy them anything isn't a good option -- they enjoy doing it!

However, one thing that did surprise me was when I asked my kids to pick out some toys to give away themselves They filled 3 boxes to overflowing! I started to protest some of them (But grandma gave you this!), but realized they really didn't play with the toys they picked out so out they went.

This is the way we'll do this from now on. Not me choosing which toys are jettisoned while they're asleep, but empowering them to do it themselves. If it really is something that I think they might later regret, it goes into the basement first.

I'll work my way towards the shelves thing... :)
